Firefighters: Embers From Fire Pit Spark Fire That Damaged New City Home
May 19, 2012 | Hot embers from a home-made fire pit are believed to have sparked a fire that damaged the deck and the siding of a New City home this afternoon, according to the New City Fire Department. Second Assistant Fire Chief Dennis Rodriguez said volunteer firefighters and Clarkstown police officers who were first to arrive at the fire were able to use fire extinguishers to keep down the fire. In addition to New City volunteer firefighters and Clarkstown police, volunteers from the Hillcrest and Congers fire departments assisted at the fire. No one was injured in the 3:40 p. m. fire at 28 Nob Hill Road, located a block off Buena Vista Road and north of New Hempstead Road in western New City. With the existing dry and windy conditions, Rodriguez said embers from the fire pit were blown onto the the home's deck. Rodriguez said the fire was extinguished in about 10 minutes. Because of these conditions, Rodriguez warned that no one should be making and open fire.

How can I make an awesome fire pit that doesn't blow smoke in my face?
Apr 15, 2009 by Traffic Star
I want to make a huge fire at my cottage that doesn't blow smoke in my face, and also doesn't make a lot of smoke.
I can design any sort of fire pit but I don't want to use suction and I don't want to make it like a fireplace where the fire rises like in a chimney.
Any cool ideas for fire pits? Stones to use, smoke not rising etc?
Where there's smoke there's fire, as the saying goes. The same holds true transversely. If you want to enjoy a fire pit you're going to get smoke in your face from time to time.
The best you can do to combat this, barring a ridiculous exhaust fan contraption, is to be sure to use dry wood. Damp, or freshly cut wood will smoke you out every time. And if you are having a fire on a windy night, that will be a bit of a problem too. If you keep the flames high the convection will carry the smoke away with it. Keep it hot and keep it dry. When it starts to smoke, add more dry wood. Do this and you will rarely be bothered, but you will still be bothered from time to time. Suck it up. You're outside. Next you'll be wanting air conditioning when the fire gets too hot? Princess. ;)
I want to build a fire pit into my deck?
May 19, 2009 by Ms. AEL
I saw a brick fire pit and I am wondering what is the best way to put this into my deck? I have seen the design before, but I am not certain how that will affect the wood. Suggestions?
I wouldn't recommend building a fire pit into your deck, as sparks could jump out and catch the decking on fire. However, you can lay a base of brick on the deck and set a free standing fire pit on top of the deck. Hope this helps.
