Campfire burn prevention and care for children
May 19, 2012 | One minute Taylor, my grandson, was playing in the picnic area and the next minute he lost his balance, stumbled backwards and fell over the rock barrier surrounding a fire pit into an active, very hot fire. Taylor's grandpa took a five-gallon bucket of water and poured the entire five gallons over Taylor’s head and body. But in July 2011, he had to go through the pain and trauma of third-degree burns when he fell into a fire pit during a family picnic. Then they saw that his arms had taken the brunt of the fire and there was skin hanging in tatters from his right arm. Taylor's Uncle Bo Lewis, of Kearns, was close by and plunged both hands into the fire to pull him out. Book review: Book review: 'Camping with Kids' full of helpful 'down and dirty' tips. Taylor Nageli of Taylorsville is a happy, bright 3-year-old boy without a care in the world, except for the availability of his next snack. I want to make an outdoor fire pit/grill. What kind of materials should I use?
Apr 02, 2007 by gandalf_for_president_3rd_age
Can just normal bricks withstand that kind of heat, or do I need to get some kind of special bricks? What kind if so? What about cement?
Can somebody give me more info about the cement?
Normal bricks can take the heat that is how they are made - they are baked in a kiln at extreme temperatures. The mortar is just plain mortar available anywhere. Fire bricks aren't necessary they are for furnaces and boilers where heat can exceed 2,000 degrees. Better check local ordinances about these things though because they are now illegal in most towns. You can use a steel outdoors fireplace or chimneas .

I don't want porcilen coated ones. Does anyone know where I can find old fashioned "real" cast Iron cooking grates?
keep your eyes open at the local dump/recycle center. Many charcoal grills have those, and are free for the taking
