2009 Lockheed Fire in Santa Cruz County started from a campfire, Cal Fire says
May 19, 2012 | BONNY DOON -- Embers from a small
fire pit outside a remote cabin in 2009 touched off the largest wildfire in the Santa Cruz Mountains in years, Cal Fire officials reported this week. In a comprehensive report on the Lockheed Fire released through a public records request, fire officials determined that a rock-ringed campfire off Bertoli Drive was still hot hours after the wildfire started. Berlant, a Cal Fire spokesman, said Wednesday that the chief lesson of the Lockheed Fire is to completely douse campfires. Despite the conclusion of the fire's origin, Cal Fire officials and prosecutors said there was not enough evidence to charge the property owner, Mario Daniel. Steady 15 mph winds whipped up the Lockheed Fire, which injured 10 firefighters in the 11 days it took to contain as it
burned outside Bonny Doon in August 2009.

Best way to make fire pit with clay soil and still have proper drainage?
May 15, 2007 by snowboardin58
We would like to make a fire pit in our backyard. The problem is, our groud is made up of a lot of clay, which would affect drainage. We have a steel portable fire pit, but we would like one a bit bigger in the ground. What is the best way to go about making a fire pit in the ground? Thanks
Dig the pit 18" (half metre) deeper than you need it and put rocks or sand in the deeper part. This will drain off much of the water until it evaporates or leeches into the surrounding clay soil. The ash from your previous fire material will absorb the rest.
Fire pit or chiminea?
Sep 09, 2006 by Tammy Miller
We bought a farm with a woods and are planning a house. with outdoor patio We want to buy a portable fire pit or one of those stee/copper chiminea fireplaces. We will be using in fall so need to stay warm. Someone said the chiminea type might help the smoke go up over our heads. Any advice?
I have owned both. You will have less smoke around with a chiminea, but a lot more heat with a fire pit or fire bowl.
