Our view: Danger of wildfires extreme this time of year

According to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, wildfire danger is extremely high in Michigan.

Every spring, the dead, dry undergrowth and blustery winds, combined with increased camping (and camp fires), homeowners burning leaves and detritus, and the natural uptick in thunderstorms in the area combines for a hazardous time in Michigan.

Here are a few wildfire safety tips this season from the MDNR:

1. Contact your local fire official before burning to obtain information about the burning regulations in your area. Obtain a burning permit from your local fire agency.

2. All burn barrels must be covered with a weighted metal cover, with holes no larger than 3/4 inch.

3. Consider alternatives to burning — leaves and grass make a fine mulch for gardens, or they can be composted; newspapers and many other every-day household items may be recycled. Recycling and composting eliminates the risk of wildfire and the smoke that comes with burning of trash and yard wastes.

Cleaning ash out of a wood burning fireplace?

Holy smokes I forgot how much ash a fireplace produces! It's time to clean mine out... we've been in our new house for about 6 months now and I haven't lived in a home with wood heat for many years. Growing up my dad always used a metal bucket that he set outside for a while before he dumped it. I don't have a metal bucket, so I haven't had a fire for over 12 hours to make sure there aren't any hot buds in there. I'm just going to use some grocery sacks, etc but I'm wondering what other people use or if you have any tips/tricks?? Thanks!
