Safety warning issued in wake of another fire

Jul 14, 2011 | IN the wake of another property fire in Bathurst this week, fire crews have issued a warning to ensure heaters and wood fireplaces are in safe working order.

Firefighters were called to a workshop attached to a property on Morrisset Street around 3.30pm on Wednesday following reports of thick smoke billowing from the roof.

Station officer at Bathurst Fire Station, Guy Dover said the flue of the workshop’s wood fire had become dislodged during three years of not being used.

“The two pieces of the flue had separated and dropped pieces of ash into the roof cavity,” station officer Dover said.

“It hadn’t been used for a while and over a period of time the wind must have moved part of the flue.”

Fire and Rescue NSW crews from Bathurst and Kelso stations removed several sheets of iron from the property’s roof to extinguish the blaze.

Station officer Dover said it is vital that all heating equipment is checked for safety prior to it being used.

May 19, 2012 | When cleaning your fireplace, spread newspapers on the hearth and mist them with water. Brush the ashes onto the dampened newspapers. The ashes will stick to the newspapers, not furniture. The remaining ash is easily sucked up in the vacuum.

What is the best fireplace ash vacuum?

Dec 08, 2007 by Larry M

find one specifically for wood ash. do not use a regular shop vac. it will clog almost immediately and eventually ruin the motor. wood ash is very fine and abrasive and will penetrate the filter of a shop vac. not sure who makes them but they do exist.

Vacuum cold fireplace ashes?

Summer is here and I still haven't cleaned our fireplace since the last time we lit a fire, some 2 months ago. I've managed to pick out the chuncky pieces. Can I vacuum the ashes without ruining our vacuum cleaner. We have the kind that you can also fill with water for washing carpets. Will the regular filter keep the motor safe?
I wouldn't do it, but it of course is up to you. My sister did that, and her vacuum started smoking....and not from hot ashes. My vacuum was fairly expensive and I just would not chance it. I found that taking the ashes out with a metal dustpan and placing them into a metal bucket is fairly fast. I use my fireplace day and night in the cold months....large house in Texas. Good luck.
