How do you clean a brick fireplace hearth?
May 19, 9984 by Teresa
We have a brick hearth on our fireplace.I have used hot soapy water and a brush to clean it in the past but it still doesn't look clean. It still has a greyish look to it from ashes. The brick are redish brown. The wall that the fireplace is on is entirely brick and the hearth looks like it doesn't even match the wall even though it is the same brick. How do I get the hearth clean?
I wouldn't use muriatic acid here. That's not its appropriate use. If all else fails, try trisodium phosphate. It's sold in hardware stores as TSP. Follow the use and safety instructions on the label. It will clean the brick and help restore some of the original color.
How do you remove animal urine stains from fireplace brick?
Sep 15, 2007 by s s
My bunny apparently used the bathroom on the brick in front of the fireplace and it dried before I realized she'd done it.
I have tried cleaning it with vinegar and water, then 409, and also with dawn dish liguid getergent and a firm scrub brush.
Nothing has worked. It looks like the stain has set in and changed the color of the brick.
Can anyone tell me how to clean this back to normal?
I think you should be less worried about the stain and more worried that bunbun will learn to love the new bathroom spot. Unfortunately animals like to *ahem* return to the same bathroom spot. They can smell very faint traces of prior accidents, and no household cleaner will stop that.
The best and only way to really clean an animal stain is to use enzyme cleaner. It's a bit hard to find, but it really works. Enzymes break down chemicals that Fluffy leaves behind. This means that critters can't sniff out past bathroom spots, and that discourages repeat behavior.
I'm not sure what will restore the color of the brick, but I will say this: you should always clean animal stains with enzyme cleaner. It may help the stain, it may not, but at least the fireplace won't be the new bunny bathroom.
