Firefighters halt blazes
May 19, 2012 | Fire authorities have stressed the importance of properly discarding fireplace ashes in the wake of the Christmas Day fire in Stamford that killed five people, which was also caused by improperly discarded embers. In the three months since that fire, at least three fires in Greenwich have been blamed on improper disposal of fireplace ashes, though none resulted in injuries. "The rear of the shed was on fire, and the brush around it was also on fire," Koczak said, adding that no one was injured in the incident. The first fire, reported at 10:36 a. m. , damaged the exterior of a detached shed at 52 Angelus Drive in Glenville, according to the Fire Department. Deputy Fire Chief Brian Koczak said the shed was about 8 feet by 10 feet. Greenwich firefighters quickly knocked down two fires -- one caused by improperly discarded ashes -- that occurred about an hour apart Tuesday morning. The homeowner mistakenly thought ashes discarded outside the shed were extinguished, Koczak said.

Cleaning ash out of a wood burning fireplace?
Oct 23, 2006 by B.
Holy smokes I forgot how much ash a fireplace produces! It's time to clean mine out... we've been in our new house for about 6 months now and I haven't lived in a home with wood heat for many years. Growing up my dad always used a metal bucket that he set outside for a while before he dumped it. I don't have a metal bucket, so I haven't had a fire for over 12 hours to make sure there aren't any hot buds in there. I'm just going to use some grocery sacks, etc but I'm wondering what other people use or if you have any tips/tricks?? Thanks!
use a shop vac. A lot easier and cleaner.
i build a fireplace using 3 buckets of water close all doors where is the water when i get up next morning?

Some of it goes to hydrate the cement the rest gradually dries out and evaporates, if there is little ventilation in the room you will see the condensation on the windows and any cold surface.
PS I would have thought three buckets was rather a large amount.
