Narragansett Victorian with ocean views

NARRAGANSETT –– The family that owns Stonecroft, a three-story house on the oceanfront side of Ocean Road, happens to be named Stone. But they had nothing to do with naming the house.

Stone adorns the exterior of the first story of this rambling home built in 1890 for Francis H. Dewey, a lawyer from Worcester, Mass. The house was designed by a Boston architect, William Gibbons Preston.

Views of the rocky shoreline and the Atlantic Ocean are available from almost every room in this 6,500-square-foot house, owned since 1984 by James and Susan Stone. A third-story balcony overlooking the ocean provides the most dramatic water views. The house also has a three-story semicircular bay with a semi-conical roof.

The Stones, who were living in Wellesley, Mass., when they bought Stonecroft, first used it as their summer home, but they moved to Narragansett full time after Mr. Stone retired.
