Should I burn firewood with the glass doors opened or closed for more heat, my heatilator has a lever on the side to allow outside air into the fireplace, does this thing work, should it be left opened or closed?
you should close the doors and adjust the outside air to the nearest point that the fire burns slow. leaving the doors open creats a draft that pulls the cold air along the floor and makes the house seem colder. leaving the doors open and then adjusting the outside air can also cause smoke to enter the house.

could it be asbestos behind refactory in heatilator fireplace insert?

The firplace insert in my 100 year old home looks to be 30 - 40 years old and the steel refactory pannel is buckeling and revealing a white fabric mat. Could it be asbestos? what else could it be? The insert is a Heatilator Mark 123 model #3138. The Steel refactory pannel is bolted to the back inside wall with the bolt heads exposed to flames.
it could be a ceramic insulation like kaowool that is used in the refractory business all the time...
