Property advice: Do we need to line the chimney for our wood-burning stove?
Jun 21, 2011 | The twin-walled stainless steel comes in two grades, one of which is only
slightly less horrendously expensive than the other. The rationale for
pouring insulation around the liner is that it keeps it warm, and therefore
helps the flue draw (by convection – ie hot air rising). I imagine this
effect is only really important in very tall flues, or those on outside
walls.
HEY BIG RENDER
Q We are about to embark on a refurbishment of a Thirties
property. It is rendered and needs redoing. I’d originally thought it would
be a straightforward lime-based replacement but hadn’t appreciated that
because more than 25 per cent is being replaced, Building Control might
insist on cavity wall insulation, which I’ve never been keen on.
A surveyor friend with no links to the company has just suggested we look
at a particular “tile-based” render system. Your Read more »

Chimney Liner?

I want to put a metal chimney liner in my chimney. My gas furnace and water heater tie in together out the chimney. My furnace has a 187,500 input and the water heater has 40,000 input. What size liner will I need to vent this out properly?
There are a couple of things that affect the sizing of a chimney liner besides the BTU ratings.Total height of the chimney and the height of the pipe from the highest draft diverter to the chimney liner[most likely on the water heater],are both appliances natural draft or is the furnace a fan assisted draft. If the total chimney and vent pipe are over 25 feet 7" will do for either combination of appliances.I have a chimney liner sizing chart in my hand. The HVAC guy says 8" -it will definitely be large enough the smallest rating on my chart for 8" is 292,000 BTU's.Measure these things and determine what type draft both appliance have and ask at the place you are purchasing the liner from.
Do I have to have insulation in my chimney around the liner?

My chimney is old and I just got a new high efficient furnace which is causing effloressence to come through the chimney walls - I need a chimney liner. I want to know why they pour insulation mix top to bottom in the chimney after installing the liner.
No, generally they will pull the liner and will hook the appliance to it including the water heater, most 82% eff. furnaces require a liner because the condensation they produce is acidic, about like orange juice and this will attack the morter in the chimney, no insulation is required.
