What is the best way to get heat from a wood-burning fireplace?

What size and shape should a fireplace grate be, and where should it be placed in the fireplace?
I want to get the best airflow backdraft to carry heat outward from the fireplace embers into the house.
I just saw some "vertical" fireplace grates from a manufacturer but I'm not really sure if and how that would work
Can I use vinyl tiles around a gas fireplace?
Jun 11, 2008 by joefreming
I have a gas fireplace. It has some outdated tiles surrounding it. I would like to use vinyl tiles (the peel and stick type) over the top of the existing tiles. Any issues? It is gas and you do not put any wood in it so no sparks or embers.
1st, it will look gross. It's probably against code, and the heat would probably make them fall off. Those tiles are crap & don't stick good even on floors. Call your village building commisioner and ask about the code.
