May 19, 2012 | When he flips a switch, the entire house lights up. “They did not have electricity in those days, but they did have candles so he got all candle fixtures,” Murphy said, making note of the
fireplaces, which also lit up. “He made all these... “This here is the home Abraham Lincoln lived in before becoming president,” Dedham resident Al Fanara explained, turning the model home around to reveal the rooms inside. Up a set of tiny steps made with even tinier bricks is the
smallest door sign identifying the resident of the home: A. Lincoln. Gesturing to the rooms inside, his partner Cassie Murphy pointed out everything Fanara made, from the bedspreads to the rugs to the curtains. It took Fanara about a year to build a dollhouse-sized replica of Lincoln’s home in Springfield, Ill. Fanara finds the bricks, lights and other construction items at specialty shops. The four rooms and two hallways are decorated to fit the period of 1860s.

picture over fireplace?

I have a question for anyone who is involved in interior decorating or design. I recently purchased an electric fireplace for my new (older) home. I later chose a picture to have framed to hang over my fireplace - however, I hadn't measured before choosing the matting and frame and well - my fireplace is 36" wide and my picture is 38" wide. So I was wondering if this is something you've seen before - or if pictures hung above fireplaces are typically smaller. Will it seem unbalanced?
It shouldn't matter for 2"....Make the picture the focal point instead of the fireplace....
i have a full size wood mantel above reddish brick fireplace, what to put there?

i have a reddish, cranberry ,off white boarder-with sage green in background with a small amount of black on bottom of boarder. walls are wheat, couch camel, chair plaid with reds, greens, pinks, yellows, orange sounds bad i know , it's nice. my floor is laminate walnut in color. right now i have a picture of a white flower with greens surrounding just the flower, background of picture is like a crannberry drape, matting is dark green with a queer black frame. i'm so lost as to what to do, been trying to decide for 2 years now, sad i know!. anyway tried green big clock, tried 3 black mirrors. my house is a split and upon entering kitchen my family room is the first thing you see with fireplace the main focal point, so i wanted something with a wow! i'm a loser with decorating. ps. thankyou so much denise
I had the same problem for years. A mantel is really a focal point to a room. I had a beautiful collection of Large seahells at one point. I've also had a collection of crystal candle holders. Right now I think of finally got what I was looking for. I have a large oil painting hung on the chimney wall and just a series of four low candles centered beneath it that ight up the picture in the evening. It looks clean, well placed and is a definate eye catcher. I think a nice piece of art really accents a fireplace. I definately feel that less is more when decorating a mantel.
