A slave to other people's pets
Jun 27, 2011 | For the five years I've been looking after other people's pets part-time for
Pet Angels in Wellington, I've had many experiences on various assignments and have met many types of pets. When someone's unable to care for their pets because, say, they're on holiday or have a family emergency, I can step in and take care of things, from a simple cat-feeding assignment to a more complex housesitting or home boarding.
I've had assignments where everything went perfectly well and there was nothing to write home about (the great majority of them), and I've had assignments where things didn't quite go to plan. I've stopped counting the cat feeding assignments I've done where I've come to feed the cats and am the recipient of multiple unsavoury presents such as birds, mice, lizards and rats! Not so nice to see - but I appreciate the gesture and the efforts the cats have gone to to make me feel welcome.
Recently I've been housesitting for a lovely lady whose cat stays inside 24 hours a day. The first time I house-sat for her, puss decided that I was too strange, and he wouldn't come out from one of his many hiding places to meet me. It was disconcerting at first, especially as I'm usually a cat magnet, and despite my best efforts to coax him out I knew he felt better just watching me from a comfortable distance. Turns out he was a little shy, and the second time I came to house-sit for him, he eventually insisted I played with him. This was incredibly easy to do as the owner had provided multiple cat "teaser" toys (the fishing rod type toys with feathers and dangly things hanging off them), scratching pads, igloos and all sorts of balls - tennis balls, catnip toys, ping pong balls, marbles, you name it. A favourite game for puss was to push a marble from the top of the stairs to the bottom, whereupon the marble would get paw-tapped underneath a mat, only for the mat to be pushed around the floor of the house while puss tried to retrieve the marble.

picture over fireplace?
Feb 07, 2007 by VenusdeMilo
I have a question for anyone who is involved in interior decorating or design. I recently purchased an electric fireplace for my new (older) home. I later chose a picture to have framed to hang over my fireplace - however, I hadn't measured before choosing the matting and frame and well - my fireplace is 36" wide and my picture is 38" wide. So I was wondering if this is something you've seen before - or if pictures hung above fireplaces are typically smaller. Will it seem unbalanced?
It shouldn't matter for 2"....Make the picture the focal point instead of the fireplace....
i have a full size wood mantel above reddish brick fireplace, what to put there?
Apr 05, 2007 by DENISE
i have a reddish, cranberry ,off white boarder-with sage green in background with a small amount of black on bottom of boarder. walls are wheat, couch camel, chair plaid with reds, greens, pinks, yellows, orange sounds bad i know , it's nice. my floor is laminate walnut in color. right now i have a picture of a white flower with greens surrounding just the flower, background of picture is like a crannberry drape, matting is dark green with a queer black frame. i'm so lost as to what to do, been trying to decide for 2 years now, sad i know!. anyway tried green big clock, tried 3 black mirrors. my house is a split and upon entering kitchen my family room is the first thing you see with fireplace the main focal point, so i wanted something with a wow! i'm a loser with decorating. ps. thankyou so much denise
I had the same problem for years. A mantel is really a focal point to a room. I had a beautiful collection of Large seahells at one point. I've also had a collection of crystal candle holders. Right now I think of finally got what I was looking for. I have a large oil painting hung on the chimney wall and just a series of four low candles centered beneath it that ight up the picture in the evening. It looks clean, well placed and is a definate eye catcher. I think a nice piece of art really accents a fireplace. I definately feel that less is more when decorating a mantel.
