A few years ago I bought a reclaimed fireplace and it seems to be covered in a substance like show polish. I would like to achieve the same affect. Thanks
Forgot to mention that this is a cast iron fire and not the wooden surround - sorry for the confusion
You need a grate polish.

How can I clean/restore a Victorian fireplace?

I think what I need is a modern equivalent of "blacklead" I have stripped off several layers of paint and now have a metal surface that is mainly black but with some uncoloured metal (steel?) showing through.
There was a product called Zebo black grate. It is a coating for fire places and a lot like shoe polish. It is now called Stovax Black Grate Polish and costs about £3.70 a tube.
