We ordered these doors for our fireplace. The installation was very easy, but the doors are completely misaligned. Fully adjusted they cannot be made to close together, and to make matters worse Heatilator themselves refuse to offer any support on their doors.The construction is quite poor, especially considering the cost. The adhesive strips used to secure the frame to the glass are misshapen and unsightly. I expected much better for the cost.

The previous review was accurate. The mechanical fit of DM1036 doors is so poor that unless you are an engineer, or a machinist, you should take a pass on these.It took me about 2 hours of completely disassembling the doors, then filing, slotting some holes and replacing some hardware to get these to fit. This is not a simple installation.There were several different problems. The glass is pressed into extruded aluminum frames, but none of the frames was aligned on the glass properly. These had to be files straight. There are bushings along the top of the frames to guide the door as it opens and closes. These were located too close to the edge of the frames and interfered with one another when the doors closed. The bushings had to be moved away from the edge of the frame. The doors would not close properly and the hinges had to be adjusted. Finally there were some screw heads that just didn't fit right and needed to be filed down.This is just a...

I purchased these doors online a few years back and tried to install them myself. After failing I returned them and forgot about it. Finally this year I went to look again to see if they had a better solution and I bought the same doors local (they would only install these doors if I bought from them). I paid $20 more for the doors and $100 to have them professionally installed and for them to use a specail paint to make the inside of my fireplace black but it was well worth it!!! I love the look of my fireplace now, well worth spending more and getting it done right.

can a fireplace insert fit inside a heatilator fireplace?
Feb 11, 2009 by charles9888I have an old heatilator fireplace at my cottage and would like to switch to a good fireplace insert.I would like to avoid removing the old heatilator and find an insert that will fit inside and avoid destroying the brick that surrounds it.I imagine it may not function as well though so I will demo the old brick and heatilator and start from scratch if I have to
I put a wood stove insert inside my heatilator, and it transformed it as a heating appliance - I can really heat my house with wood now, rather than just playing with it. I installed the largest Quadra-Fire insert I could buy, I'm sure others are good too. I also lined the chimney with a stainless steel liner, and it draws better now, too.
could it be asbestos behind refactory in heatilator fireplace insert?
Oct 27, 2008 by EponymousThe firplace insert in my 100 year old home looks to be 30 - 40 years old and the steel refactory pannel is buckeling and revealing a white fabric mat. Could it be asbestos? what else could it be? The insert is a Heatilator Mark 123 model #3138. The Steel refactory pannel is bolted to the back inside wall with the bolt heads exposed to flames.
it could be a ceramic insulation like kaowool that is used in the refractory business all the time...
