Lately, we haven’t been going anywhere we’d not already been, so I put her in the dark corner of the “boot,” and left her there. Oh, I’d occasionally take her out to recharge her battery in order that stored information wouldn’t disappear. During those infrequent encounters, we never conversed, not so much as a “turn around at the first opportunity, or we’ve arrived,” did she utter. Had we been a couple, the situation would have best been described as a “frosty” relationship.
There have been times when I’ve recalled the good, old days of traveling across country with Drusilla riding in the navigator’s position attached to my windshield. Sometimes, we’d cruise for miles without a spoken word. Those were carefree and happier days. Then, the intersection at River Plantation Drive and I-45 was completed. From that day forward, our relationship was one in decline. It made no difference from which direction I approached the intersection, her constant instructions ran counter to correct directions. If I were going to The Woodlands, she’d direct me to turn right at the I-45 service road rather than crossing underneath the freeway. Then, for the next few miles she’d badger me until her inner workings detected that I was right and she was wrong. It’s a good thing that I was in familiar territory or I’d have wandered, like Moses searching for The Promise Land, anytime a new road opened.
