Loving hands transform 1920s Madisonville home
May 19, 2012 | "The mayor (Peter Gitz, who has been mayor of Madisonville for 35 years) said he bought his first pack of cigarettes here," Anthony said. Then they discovered the house in old Madisonville, and she told him, "I really like that little house. It was a tiny, two-bedroom, one-bathroom, 900-square-foot house on a 60-by-80-foot lot, but it was in the heart of the historic town on the picturesque Tchefuncte River, and they knew it had potential. After Anthony bought the house, he moved in and Judy started coming from Lafayette on weekends to help him work on it. He said he smoked one, and it was so strong he threw the rest away. "I just loved the small-town atmosphere," she said. The plumbing and electrical work had been updated by the previous owner, and the idea of living in a piece of Madisonville history was appealing. "I kind of pushed him into buying it," she said. The Craftsman-style shotgun, built in the 1920s, served as a neighborhood grocery store in earlier times, although they've never been able to pinpoint the exact years.

60" or 72" mantle shelf over 36"fireplace?
Sep 25, 2008 by Lot67
We have a 36" fireplace with a 3 sided 13x13 tile in 2 story great room. We're not going to put a full mantle, but just a shelf over the fireplace. Would you go with a 60" or 72"? And would it look better if I left 6 inches of space from top of the tile to shelf or put shelf directly on top of tile?
Were planning to put a 42" flat screen tv over the mantel. The wall is 19 feet wide. 72" stick out 6 inches from wall because of the fireplace box.
How big a mantle depends on the wall behind it. If it's a long wall, go with the longer mantle. If not, go with the shorter one. I'd bring the mantle down to the top of the tile, as long as it's a minimum of 54" to the top. Hope this helps.
