Country Life: Trash Talking - Richard Brookhiser remarks upon the rigors of ...
May 19, 2012 | "Bag" is construed loosely: As many bags as you can stuff into a contractor bag and seal with a twist-tie counts as only one. Once upon a time the dump was a smoldering slope southeast of town where people simply pitched everything, releasing smoke and toxins into the pure mountain air. you pay with tickets, which may be purchased at the town hall or the dump itself (checks only -- which suggests someone once skimmed the cash). My town has a transfer station -- universally called the dump -- and unless you pay for a service to pick up your waste, you must take it there yourself. Every bag of unsortable costs a small charge to leave. The categories into which we sort are
glass, metal, paper, plastic, free stuff, and unsortable. But even the country is green now, and we recycle, though the dump is still a funky place. Everything else,
glass and the rest of it, can be left off gratis. (Garbage trucks, one would think from their name, play a role. ) In the country we are more intimate with our own detritus.

Can anyone tell me what a fireplace fender with leather seats on top is 'properly' called?

You see them a lot around these large old 'manor house' or pub fireplaces. Big brass affairs with flat leather pads to perch on.
It's called a " club fender". If you google them you'll find a few companies offering them. Price range £400 - £1000 - and more I guess...
What is a fireplace fender?
Nov 30, 2008 by Fanny
how is it used in the fireplace? who invented it? when was the fender popular?
if possible, please post links of where you got the information from.
thanks!
it is a low metal guard to confine falling coals to a hearth. it also prevents the house from being burned down. fenders go back to the early 17th century. houses, usually with wooden floor boards were popular and without fenders, they would go on fire easily. there are many different designs for fenders and many are antique.
