How do you clean a brick fireplace hearth?
May 19, 9984 by Teresa
We have a brick hearth on our fireplace.I have used hot soapy water and a brush to clean it in the past but it still doesn't look clean. It still has a greyish look to it from ashes. The brick are redish brown. The wall that the fireplace is on is entirely brick and the hearth looks like it doesn't even match the wall even though it is the same brick. How do I get the hearth clean?
I wouldn't use muriatic acid here. That's not its appropriate use. If all else fails, try trisodium phosphate. It's sold in hardware stores as TSP. Follow the use and safety instructions on the label. It will clean the brick and help restore some of the original color.
How to set tile on raised fireplace hearth?
Dec 12, 2008 by Skinny
I will be tiling a raised fireplace hearth (ceramic tile). How should I arrange the tiles that meet at the edge? Should the horizontal and vertical tiles meet edge to edge, then grout in between? Or, should one of the tiles overlap the other one on the edge? Or....is there a different way to do it all together, like putting in those curved tiles on the edge? Thanks for your help.
I ll help you again skinny.. The horizontal tile should over lap the vertical ones if the tile doesn t have a SBN, ( surface bull nose) One other way to "trim it out is to put a "L" piece of metal that covers the edge. Available any where you buy tile. Most common name out there is called Schulter Metals. They come is several colors like aluminum, bronze and silver. There are plastic versions of these too that come white, black and others.E mail me again skinny if you have more questions. GL
