I want to put a pellet insert fireplace in my fireplace/chimney?
Feb 27, 2007 by Mark R
Was told that my chimney is "not recommended" to be used often (previous owner didn't use and did cap... rusted throughout I guess). Do I need to invest in repairing the chimney lining in order to have a pellet stove insert can I use the chimney as is. Or could they just "vent" it partly up the chimney?
If you have a chimeny in need of repair, do NOT use it as is. You'll most likely butn down your house.
There may be a couple of options, depending. If it is a clay flue, you may be able to have it re-lined wtih a double or triple wall galvanized flue. If it is already a metal flue, it will probably need to be replaced.
Can I cost-justify a fireplace insert?
May 17, 2006 by Mark K
I have a woodburning fireplace & electric forced air heat. Any way to cost-justify a fireplace insert of any kind? I'm curious about both wood stove and pellet stove inserts.
You can if you use electricity to heat your house. Inserts have much better control over heat management, that is they don't lose much heat. Many of them also use blowers to keep the warmer air circulating, whereas a real fire-place would provide heat only in the area immediately around the fire.
