Can I burn a fire with glass fireplace doors closed?
Oct 04, 2007 by phanstar330
I have a 52 year old house with an old fireplace that was once converted to gas, and has now been converted back to wood burning. Last year when we tried to use it, everytime our furnace kicked on we got headaches. Our air intake is directly opposite our fireplace and I am afraid it is pulling smoke into the house. I think installing glass doors will solve this problem. I saw another question that said this is fine so long as you open your bottom vents? What are bottom vents? My fireplace only has a flue and no additional venting. Help please?!?
Some older fireplaces have no bottom vent (like mine). Air for combustion is coming mostly from the room (I suppose a little must be from the top of the chimney, but not much). A glass front on the fireplace will still burn, but you won't get much heat from the fire. Closing the damper on the fireplace (when you are not using it) will help stop air drafting from the chimney to your heater intake. Good luck.
Best way to install Fireplace glass doors on uneven brick?
Apr 20, 2009 by babysongbird
We have a beautiful fireplace with uneven brick. However, the draft from the chimney is brutal and we're looking to install glass doors to cover the front of the opening. The galss doors we've bought stay in place fine, but have a gap between the frame and the stones. We will try to place the fire retardent insulation between them to fill the gap, but what can we use to cover that up so it isn't unsightly? Is there any other way of doing this?? Thanks in advance for your help.
