District 200 to showcase 2011 Building Trades house
May 10, 2011 | Woodstock District 200’s newest Building Trades House will be open for the public to view on Friday, May 20 from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday, May 21 from 10:00 a.m.- 2:00 p.m. The house is located at 1341 Sandpiper Lane in the Country Ridge subdivision in Woodstock.
This is the 39th year that students in D200’s Building Trades program have constructed, landscaped and sold a house in the Woodstock community. The high quality of workmanship and materials used in this year’s model live up to the tradition of excellence that homebuyers have come to expect in the district’s Building Trades homes.
This year’s model is a 2,200 sq. ft. three bedroom, two story home with a loft and full basement. Constructed by students from both high schools, it is appropriately called The New Beginning. The house features a family room with a direct vent fireplace, master bedroom with walk-in closet, two and one half baths, and a completely insulated and finished garage. This year’s model also features such amenities as a colonial oak trim package, central air conditioning, ceiling fans, automatic garage door opener, and cultured marble bathroom vanity tops.

should I supplement my oil forced air system with my propane direct vent fireplace to save money?
Oct 15, 2007 by cmate
with oil prices going up, I am trying to weigh my options for heating my house - I have an oil burner furnace, with hydro air, and also have a propane direct vent fireplace. does it make sense to try to take advantage of the fireplace to save money?
Prices of both propane and oil fluctuate so one is not necessarily cheaper than the other.
Your forced air system is more efficient in heating the home and the fireplace the room it is in. So if your strategy is to keep the room warm and the home cool it will work, if not you will have a warm home and an overheated room.
Why can't a wood burning stove in a garage be vented liked a direct-vent fireplace?
Feb 04, 4978 by Doctor Sus
I realize direct-vent fireplaces are gas operated but I thought if I constructed an air intake adjacent to the hot chimney and ran it to the stove it would act in a similar manner; however, I was told this can't be done but wasn't given an explanation. Could someone clear this up for me?
Just to clarify, I would have the burner exhausted out the side of the garage AND the air intake would be adjacent to it, like a direct-vent fireplace.
Well the wood burning stove in a garage theoretically is in a location with other flammable materials and or fuel in your car. Wod stove, sparks, fumes = BOOM.
THat is why code requires electric outlets to be 4 feet off the ground in a garage.
If you will be doing any wood work you have a second problem. Build up of sawdust in the air. A guy was killed with the same set up. Wood dust in the air, opened the wood stove door to reload, dust detonated (yup DETONATED) killing him.
So please ponder the location and other factors before using a wood stove in the garage.
