I would like to use the fireplace to help heat my small home so I don't have to run the furnace as much throughout the winter months. I have read that a fireplace is not an efficent source of heat. Can anything make it more efficent?
They make special fireplace inserts that enable you to capture more of the heat from your fireplace. Go to a fireplace shop and ask for help on fireplace inserts.

I have a 2500 sq ft home and would like to add a fireplace. I don't need brick or anything elaborate, just wood burning.
Find a place that sells the metal pre-formed fireplace units and do it yourself. Thew come with a triple wall chimney and are totally safe. With the brick lining inside no one will ever know that it isn't all brick. They are also much lighter weight and can stand on a floor with no extra support. They are zero clearance and can be put right against a wall. Frame around with wood and cover with man made stone or thin phony bricks.
