EPA plans to crack down on wood smoke emissions

When fuel oil prices soar, as they have this year, more Mainers turn to wood heat. But wood smoke contains fine particles that can cause health problems. In some locations, especially river valleys, residential wood smoke is a major source of winter air pollution.

Now the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is preparing regulations meant to tighten emissions limits for new residential wood heaters. For the first time, these regulations will cover pellet stoves and outdoor boilers -- heat sources that have become popular in Maine.

Also likely to be included are new indoor furnaces and cookstoves.

The proposed rules don't involve any existing heaters. And new fireplaces, both factory-built and masonry, will continue to be exempt, at the urging of industry.

But the pending changes are noteworthy, because they cover most of the wood-burning devices common in Maine and represent the first substantial changes since the EPA set performance standards to "certify" wood stoves, 23 years ago.

Is it tacky to buy a fireplace tool set to set beside an electric fireplace?

An electric fireplace is obviously not real but I am considering buying a nice brass fireplace tool set just to complete the "look" if that makes any sense plus I think it would look nice beside my oak/brass electric fireplace. Any thoughts (yay or nay)would be appreciated.
I think it would be a super cute idea. Who cares if the tools aren't "necessary." The look and feel is much more important, in my opinion!

is this a fire hazard? we have a gas log set in our fireplace and a metal fireplace screen in front of the?

fireplace. my wife placed two 2 foot tall scarecrows on the fireplace hearth. one on the left side of the hearth and the other an the right. the scarecrows are made of straw. the fireplace screen is between the log set and these things sitting on the hearth. is it a fire hazard to have something like this sitting on the hearth when the fireplace is off but the pilot light is on? obviously i wouldnt light the set with these things on the hearth. i wonder if a spark could shoot out from underneath the log set pilot light and somehow make it through the screen and cause a fire. is this far fetched or is there a risk here?
Best advice is to keep combustible materials at least 1.5 m (5ft) from any sources of ignition.
