Gather 'round the fire pit
Jun 09, 2011 | Fire pit tips
Experts offer several tips regarding wood- and gas-fire
pits:
Consider your lifestyle when choosing one. Are you prepared to
stock wood and build a real fire? Are there any restrictions in
your area? Do you have the space around the pit for safety and
proper fire management? Put a fire pad under the pit if you’re placing it on a wood
deck. A 4-foot surround of brick, stone or slate will provide a
nonflammable barrier. Place the pit in a clean, clutter-free area with no foliage
overhangs and lots of ventilation. Have a licensed professional install your natural-gas fire pit.
Keep lines free of cobwebs and soot at all times. Have safety gloves, a screen and, ideally, a lid available;
gloves are useful for handling hot metal parts, screens protect
from flying sparks and a lid will seal off the pit from oxygen when
you’re done. Build small fires first, so you can see what’s happening with
wind patterns, before building medium fires. Never build a large
blaze

Can I remove my gas logs and make my fireplace wood burning?
Dec 26, 2006 by Mike Hunt
I never use my gas fireplace because of the cost of natural gas however I would like to take my gas logs out, shut off the gas and make it wood burning. Is that possible/safe? It is an all brick fireplace and chimney. It has a fairly large flue so I think it could accomodate the smoke. Has anyone done this with a fireplace that was built as gas?
Yes, you can. But your best bet would be to leave the gas part connected and use that as a starter only. A few years ago our gas logs cracked, so we took them out, and used wood logs for awhile until we could replace them.
