Furnace Filters?
Dec 05, 2006 by Michelle Q
Hi, I have recently cleaned my furnace filter and Im not sure which direction it goes back in. I have a nordyne Filter which are the reusable filters. I cant figure out which side faces the furnace and which side doesnt. Thanks
Changing Filters
Filters should be replaced monthly, or if reusable filters are
installed, they should be cleaned monthly.
1. Unscrew the filter box access door fastener (see
Figure 1). Set aside for future use.
2. Remove access door.
3. Slide the right side filter out and then the left side filter.
Discard both filters.
4. Insert new filter on the left side first. Ensure the back
edge of the filter is underneath the back bracket. (See
Figure 1.)
5. After inserting left filter into box, rest the filter bottom
upon the support tab on the center rail. This will hold
the left filter in place while inserting the right filter.
6. Insert new filter on the right side next. Ensure the back
edge of the filter is underneath the back bracket. (See
Figure 1.)
7. Replace access door. The left side of the door should
hinge with left side of box, and then the right side
should be secured with fastener removed in step 1.
(See Figure 1.)

Do newer high percentage filtration furnace filters damage furnaces?
Dec 17, 2007 by countrytc
A plumber told us that the newer style furnace filters that remove a high percentage of the dust and pollens restricts airflow enough to strain the furnace fan. He said to go back to the older style that filters out much less. Someone else said these high filtration filters are just fine and cause no problems. Does anyone have good information about this situation?
In a properly designed system they will not be a problem if they are replaced regularly. Ask yourself this question would you rather trap the dirt before it clogs up your furnace secondary heat exchanger or ac evaporator coil or pair a repairman 100s of dollars to come and fix the system and clean it. A simple way to tell if it is causing too much air restriction is to check the temperature rise of the furnace. For more info, check out the air filters page at my source.
