Winter weather has finally hit mid-state Illinois! I have been prepared and had the furnace all ready to go. My family returned home on Thanksgiving to a cold house. My old mechanical round style thermostat had finally failed (it had been acting up in the recent days). I was a little nervous having to select a new thermostat and even more nervous about installing it. I'm not a real hands-on person with regard to home repair. But we were in a real need for something. I picked this unit up very late on Thanksgiving night and proceeded to take it home (don't forget the 2 AA batteries). This unit was replacing an old round mechanical style thermostat in my home. The box says it would be a workable replacement solution and it was. Installation was very simple (thank goodness I only have a 2-wire heating only system). I removed the old thermostat from the wall and removed the two wires (after powering off my system) from the old thermostat...

Installed the new Hunter thermostat in just a few minutes with the help of the on line wiring guide. The hook was from a 6 wire system and 3 of the wires were not color coded or labeled with the same reference type. The web site provided the wiring diagram and the reason for the extra wires that were no longer to be used. There was concern that the 1 degree on/off would run the furnace too often and the instructions were clear on how to reset the function to 3 degrees. Sat last night with a comfortable warm 5th wheel and enjoyed the evening. Have let several of the other units that were having the same problem know the results. The old thermostat when set at 70 degrees would come on at 64 and shut off at 75 degrees.

Easy to install and to use.....my error when purchased. I thought this unit had the option to set various times and days for on/off. Still a good unit.

"When the house is empty, the thermostat could be turned up and set to have the temperature drop to more comfortable levels by the time you arrive home," Kweller said.

If the thermocouple is bad your furnace will not come on at all. They cost about $6. You can check to see if...the fan is running or not or if the air filter is clogged.
There is usually a limit switch that will turn off the gas if the fan doesn't come on. After it cools down the gas will come on again. The thermostat could be bad? That will cost you around $35 to $50 or more depending on the kind of thermostat you need. Hope that helps.

I have installed a separate blower in the second storey of our house, but unfortunately it works so well it gets to cold at night.
I have an extra thermostat, I guess I now need a 25v transformer or whatever else to make this happen. This thermostat will be completely separate from the existing thermostat as it is doing a separate task. I need the room to reach a certain temperature and stay there. Programing a timer would not want to guess how the night air will do throughout the night. A thermostat is best. Any suggestions?

Get a 24 volt relay and a 24 volt transformer. Wire the t-stat to turn on and off the relay. Wire the fan power lead through the switching contacts on the N.O. posts on the relay. The transformer will take 110 volts down to 24 volts and power the t-stat and then power the relay. The fan will turn on and off with the t-stat. Make sure you have the right configuration on the t-stat. A heat and cool t-stat will have several contacts on it. Use the R (or RC) and Y contacts. This will turn the fan off on temperature fall. R (or RH) and W will turn the fan off on temperature rise. Hope this helps!! Good luck!
