Siemens says first OEM to tap US steel arc-furnace after-market
May 12, 2011 | Industrial components maker Siemens says it has become the first
original equipment manufacturer in the US to produce and repair the electric
arc furnaces that steelmakers use to melt scrap steel.
The company said it now has the capability to repair, fabricate and
provide support for EAF components, such as water-cooled panels, at its EAF
manufacturing facility in Milan, Ohio. Prior to the upgrade, Siemens said its
US customers had to have parts for the furnaces serviced at the company's
other EAF site in Monterrey, Mexico, which involved higher freight costs,
longer transit time and customs clearance.
"It filled a hole in what we could offer in the past," Robert Strain,
Siemens' account manager for metallurgical services, told Platts. "[The
Monterrey site] has good labor prices, but oftentimes -- particularly for
customers here in the northern half of the United States -- freight costs
were expensive."
In particular, Strain said, the Milan upgrade has allowed Read more »

Whats the difference between an electric and gas furnace? as far as cost and upkeep go?
Feb 07, 1575 by BS and thats no BS
I'm looking at Condos right now one has a gas furnace and water tank, while the other 2 have an electric(forced air) furnace and an electric water heater.
Which is more expensive to run in terms of energy bills? Do Electric Furnaces last longer then gas? Are they cheaper to replace? Does an electric furnace use a heating element or what?(vs a gas using a flame)
The one I'm looking at still has an electric furnace from the mid 70's. Should i be worried?
Electric is MUCH more expensive to operate. It uses something called "heat strips" to provide heat. Have you ever seen a fake fireplace that provides heat by blowing air over a coil that heats up? It provides heat but is very expensive to run because it has to keep the coil red hot to provide heat. Well that's the same way an electric furnace is going to heat your condo, except it has strips that it heats up and blows air over.
I would definitely go with the one with gas heat. By the way, a forced hot air furnace can still be gas. That's what we had in New Jersey and my bills were not out of line.
A gas furnace costs more to replace, but a lot less to operate. Same with a gas dryer. It's more to purchase, but less to operate.
An electric furnace from the 70's is probably not a very energy efficient model so I would definitely think twice.
Good luck with finding your new condo and happy moving!!
Does an electric furnace cost the same amount to buy and install as a gas furnace?

What are typical prices for a furnace for a 3 bedroom house, for gas or electric? Do they come with the A/C evaporator coil in them, so we can hook up our central A/C system to the furnace unit? Or would we have to install the A/C coil separately?
you can buy a air handler however you want to buy it. with the evaporator attached or seperate. typically its a matched system if its new. id say around 2000 bucks for just A coil with electric heat, do the whole thing A coil electric heat and new condensing unit outside around 3000, switch to the new R410 freon it will be a little more since they have to run new larger line sets. if you want AC with Heatpump and electric auxillary 3-5,000
