Does a humidifier reduce a High Efficiency Furnace's effectiveness?
Dec 14, 2007 by mmurphy384
I recently replaced an old 80% furnace with a 96% High-Efficiency Model. I used my existing whole house humidifer which bleeds hot air off of the output of the furnace, humidifies it, and returns it into the return air. A short feedback loop to humidify the air.
Because the furnace is a condensing furnace, does humidifying the air act to create more work for the furnace and reduce its efficiency?
Humid air is a better heat carrier. Because of the water vapor in the air the density is ever so slightly increased. I would think that it if you were able to calculate it you would find that the increase in effeincy is neglegible.
Note: changing water to water vapor takes a little heat energy to do so.. so maybe things equal out in the end.
The condensing part of the furnace is in the burner. It is completely separated from the air the humidifer sees by the heat exchanger. Dont let the terms fool you.
Is a mid efficiency two stage furnace more efficient than a one stage high efficiency furnace?
Oct 01, 2007 by Time to live
I am getting quotes to replace the furnace in my house and 2 of the companies have told me that a mid efficiency 2 stage furnace is better than a high efficiency one stage furnace. Funny no one mentioned a high efficiency 2 stage furnace.
instead of thinking about single or two stage find out what the actual efficiency rating is. They should be able to show you data sheets from the manufacturer. That said keep in mind that the time it takes for it to pay for itself in energy savings may not be worth it for a few more points in efficiency.
