Smoke won't clear on outdoor wood burner issue

May 22, 2012 | Galestok said the planning board session, held last Thursday, April 19, was well-attended, this time for proponents for the furnaces, as well as the residents who pushed for the previous ban on the devices. The planning board here met last Thursday to discuss the on-again, off-again controversy, this time sending the matter for review to the Environmental Commission and setting the matter down for further review in June. LOWER TOWNSHIP – The smoke just won’t clear on the township’s outdoor wood burner problem. The planning board has extended an invitation to officials from the state’s Department of Environmental Protection, which regulates the outdoor furnaces. “This is an issue that won’t go away,” said township manager Mike Voll, following that remark with a quip about the “smoke not clearing” on the issue. “We’ve made no new recommendation,” said planning and zoning director William Galestok. In June 2010, South Andrielle Lane homeowner Pawal Banach installed one of the home heating devices. Read more »

Questions about hooking up outdoor wood furnace to indoor propane furnace?

Dec 27, 2006 by Lori W
Just wondering on how best to hook up to a forcced hot air system. Thanks!
OK more details:-)
We bought one and have it installed up to the point of actually connecting it our existing indoor furnace. We have propane as our main heat source right now. He was told that it was a simple set up but is hearing conflicting ways to "tap" into it. Just wondering if anyone out there has installed these or knows who we should call. Obviously we are trying to save money but want it hooked up right. Thanks!
first off, i will assume (i hate to though) that the wood furnace has its own blower, thermostat, and control wiring.

what you need to do is tap into the main trunk on the supply and return side. put a one way damper in the duct going to and from the wood furnace, and do the same in the duct going to and from the gas furnace.

by doing this, when the wood furnace fan kicks on, the dampers for the wood furnace will be pulled open and the dampers for the gas furnace will be forced shut. similarly, when the gas furnace is running the dampers for the wood furnace will be shut and the ones for the gas will be open.

if you dont use dampers, you will just make a circuit thought what ever furnace is not in use and no air will blow through the house.

you may omit the dampers in the return side on doth units, but you will have some heat loss, but not much

i dont suggest running the two furnaces in series. if you do, you should put the gas furnace first, as another man suggested. the problem is, if you run the gas furnace and the wood furnace is cold, you will lose most of the heat from the gas furnace. the wood furnace will act like a thousand pound heat exchanger and you will be heating the great out doors.

hope this helps,
