Energy savings realized in Kittery
May 22, 2012 | George Kathios, superintendent of wastewater services, said the pellet boilers replaced a 20-year-old "very inefficient" oil
furnace and six propane
heaters. KITTERY, Maine — Two wood pellet boilers installed in the fall at Kittery's wastewater treatment plant have already saved $5,000 in fuel costs — and are among the first steps toward a goal of becoming energy self-sufficient. The 191,000-British thermal unit pellet boilers cost the town $88,000, including installation. When he started researching a replacement for the oil furnace, the Town Council was clear: There had to be payback within 10 years, he said. The contractor, EC Robbins Construction of Eliot, was looking to add the installation of pellet systems to its business, and its bid was $68,000 less than the next-highest bidder. "It's about time we stopped talking about becoming independent from fossil fuels and take action to accomplish that goal," Kathios said. He investigated natural gas as an option, but the line does not come into that part of Kittery.

Can I use a propane furnace on city gas lines?

There are some good prices on propane furnaces but I 'm not sure I can use them.
Does the city gas pipes carry natural gas or propane? Will either work?
"City gas" in the US is natural gas. A propane furnace would need to be converted. Often a furnace is shipped as a natural gas furnace and some included the parts needed for conversion to propane. But if bought as a propane unit that means it already has been converted and likely won't have the necessary parts to convert.
You would be better off buying a natural gas unit.
If sold as a propane unit your parts list would be for the propane even if you converted. But that is not a big deal but it does add a condition that can create errors with repairs if the tech is not informed it was a propane unit that was converted.
