New Law: Homes To Have Carbon Monoxide Detectors

Feb 07, 3295 | BAKERSFIELD, Calif. -- As of July 1, 2011, new State law requires a Carbon Monoxide alarm to be installed in all existing single family dwellings that have an attached garage, fireplace, gas-fired heater, water heater, or other gas fired appliances.

The Carbon Monoxide (CO) detector needs to be installed outside of sleeping areas (typically in the hallway) and on every floor level (including basements).

Carbon Monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas that is produced as a by-product of incomplete combustion from heaters, fireplaces, furnaces and other types of appliances and cooking devices. CO poisoning accounts for around 30 to 40 avoidable deaths in California each year, according to the new law Home buyers and sellers will also see this new CO detector requirement on real estate disclosure forms starting July 1, 2011, similar to smoke alarms and strapped water heater disclosure statements. There is a $200 fine for not having a CO detector, where required, after July 1, Read more »

What is more expensive gas fireplace or space heaters?

Apr 27, 2009 by Shree P
Downstairs basement we rent out rooms. They are friends and we go down all the time. But its so cold downstairs. We had the gas fireplace on but it went off and we dont know how to turn it on so the guys started using space heaters in their rooms.

Which is more expensive to run? Gas fireplace or space heaters. them Thank a bunch.
Gas used to be cheap to run, but nowadays, it is just as expensive as electric and oil.

Space heaters now a days are safe, but STILL be careful when using them. They still can catch other objects on fire.

I would say that they both will cost about the same to run.
