Wood Boilers Hearing Gets Heated

May 22, 2012 | In rural areas and other places where wood is plentiful, the free-standing, shed-sized heaters are springing up. Unlike standard wood stoves, wood boilers require more fuel, tend to emit more smoke and release a higher volume of particulate... Homes for sale or sold with boilers must meet that requirement, and existing boilers must meet that requirement after 2017. In Rhode Island, corresponding bills in the House and Senate  (pdf) prohibit new and existing wood boilers from operating on lots smaller than a quarter-acre. Good fireplaces make good neighbors. The boilers must also be within 50 feet of the property line and 75 feet of an occupied building. Only a handful of states regulate wood boilers. They have gained popularity during the past 10 years as an alternative to high-priced heating fuels such as oil and gas. Wood boilers, also known as hydronic heaters, have been around since the early 1990s. That's what a move to regulate outdoor wood boilers intends to accomplish. Newly... Read more »

Help! Quick! No Privacy in two-sided gas fireplace! You can see through from the Sitting Room to the Bedroom!?

Jun 01, 2007 by Jennifer A
Quick! The Stone Masons are coming and I want to resolve this before they get started, but noone can give me a good solution. Besides a freestanding screen, what can I do for privacy? I have moved into a house with a two-sided gas fireplace that you can see straight through from the sitting room to bedroom! (stone on sitting room side and marble/wood mantle on the bedroom side) I don't know what the builders were thinking...possibly that they would never have nosey children running around the house and that whoever might buy the house after they were finished with it wouldn't have children either.
I'm not 100% sure this would work but how about high temperature paint(used for painting car parts and other things)? If you can get it to adhere to the glass it should be able to handle the heat. I would recommend going with a black paint otherwise it going to look bad from the soot of fires.
