Jul 31, 2011 | We have a porous dark-brick fireplace. It uses natural gas but also can burn wood. It is seldom used. We would like to paint it a lighter color so the room would not appear as dark. Any suggestions on how to prime and paint it? Also, would we have to look for a special paint that can take the heat?

Preparation is the key to a successful painting project. You need to make sure the brick is clean and dust free. Vacuuming and scrubbing the brick is a great way to do this.

Refer to the paint manufacturer’s specific directions to make sure you clean with the correct detergents.

Once you have properly cleaned the brick, apply one or two coats of primer to all surfaces to be painted. We’ve had good luck with Xim Peel Bond primer/sealer, available at Sherwin-Williams stores. It is a clear primer that can be tinted so you can see what you’ve primed. You can brush, roll or spray it on.

After the primer has dried, paint the surface with the latex paint of your choice. Make sure to use latex paint; oil-based paints dry hard and will crack over time.

I usually recommend using a high-quality 100 percent acrylic latex finish that has a sheen of “eggshell” or higher. The higher the paint sheen, the easier the surface will be to clean. Since you describe your brick as very porous, you may have to apply several coats to properly cover everything.

I don’t recommend you paint the firebox itself because no paint will withstand the heat; just paint the exterior surfaces.

DO YOU HAVE A QUESTION?
Pilot light will not stay lit on my vent free natural gas fireplace - why?
Nov 04, 2006 by Jacob V
I have a vent free natural gas fireplace. It has worked fine for the past 7 years. Today when I tried to light the pilot, it will not stay lit. Lights fine but when I release the button, it goes out. Any thoughts as to why this is happening?
Most likely it's the thermocouple. You need to hold the button for a minute or so when lighting, to allow time for the flame to heat the thermocouple... Have a look at the pilot flame too, in case it's just corrosion that doesn't allow a nice pilot flame to actually heat the thermo couple.
why is my natural gas fireplace emitting a high-pitched tone?
Apr 11, 2006 by tman
This tone started to emit a couple of days ago. Whenever I turn on the fireplace (with remote control), the tone stops.
sounds like there could be a blockage in the nozzle where the gas is emitted from. have a maintenance done on it and a cleaning on the system
