Answer: You have several options: a gas fireplace kit, a vent-free gas fireplace and a gas fireplace insert. None involve structural changes, but there are significant differences in aesthetics, energy efficiency, and effects on the air inside your townhouse. Having a gas line within eight feet is great, because basic installation costs often include hooking up to a gas line within 10 feet.

A gas log kit (about $850 installed, or maybe $200 more if you want remote-control flames) will give you the look of an open fire but not a lot of heat. The big downside is that installers must lock the damper into a partially open position. That guards against someone lighting the fire and forgetting to open the vent, which could flood your home with carbon monoxide. Having the damper open all of the time, of course, means that you’re losing heated or cooled air all the time — not the solution you’re seeking. To avoid that, you’d also need to install tight-fitting glass doors. Although these cost as little as $700, ones that are truly airtight start about $1,700, says Nancy Bart, a saleswoman at the Bromwell’s fireplace shop in Falls Church (703-207-9800; www.bromwellsthe fireplacepeople.com ). So the cost of switching to gas logs could top $2,500.

I am smelling gas odor when using my ventless gas fireplace..is this normal?

I have a ventless fireplace(also called a ventless gas log heater) in my livingroom. The way it is set up, there is a clamp that props open the flue about 1/2 inch. The first time we ran it we immediately got a strong gas odor that filled the whole house. The gas man came out when I reported the smell and he said the odor is normal a by-product of gas burning and I should run the fireplace with the flue closed. But the odor gives us a headache so we run it with the flue completely open ..odor is gone but we get no heat out of it at all. What is he talking about when he says the gas odor is normal..this just doesnt seem right even though he had the co2 wand out and did not detect anything... and running it with the flue closed that really doesnt seem right!!!

Gas leaks and/or vapors will kill you!! The headaches are your body telling you something is wrong. If it is a true gas leak anything that causes a minimal spark could ignite it and blow up your home and kill everyone in it. Turn the fireplace completely off so the pilot goes out. If it is the only thing in the house being fed off of a tank of some sort turn the tank off at the valve till it can be looked at by someone else. If you have natural gas at a meter you do not need to worry about the supply to the rest of the house assuming this is the first and only problem you have had prior to the install of the fireplace insert.
Contact a gas appliance repair person from another company immediately and get them to check it and set the flue damper correctly purge your lines and use a gas sniffer for any leaks in the lines, couplers and valves.
Don't mean to scare you but I have had to be involved in some gas explosion investigations in my state that people had lost their lives in.

Where can i find plans for building a fireplace/mantel for a ventless gas firebox?

I'm putting a ventless gas fireplace in my house it comes with gas logs and a firebox with a fan. I need to build a fireplace/hearth around it preferably out of faux stone, but i dont know where to begin. i would like to find some plans or instructions online. please help!

As a HVAC professional, I must ask you to please reconsider a vent less fireplace.
Every day in America 1 to 10 people are killed by accidental carbon monoxide poisoning.
A gas appliance is one of the biggest producers of carbon monoxide, thus this is the biggest offender.
When you burn a fossil fuel, you have a by product, and need to vent it outside.
Check with your local building department in your town, or county.
And be safe first.
