I didn't have any design or function problems with my unit, at all. It worked fine right out of the box. For my purpose (heating a tent or a small bedroom in case of a power outage), I'd buy it again (and the price is right). BTW, the Winter temps in northwest WA are usually pretty mild at sea level, so although the 1500 BTU output isn't much, it is all I need. The very first time I lit my unit, I was puzzled why it took 5 or 6 clicks of the insta-start spark to light it, even though Coleman predicts this in their instructions. By telling you to start clicking the spark right after opening the valve, I suspect Coleman is making sure you don't let a large amount of propane build up before you hit the button. In other words, I suspect it takes the same amount of time to click the starter 5 or 6 times as for the unit to build up enough propane to light. I purchased this unit to use in my deer stand in Minnesota this November. Overall I was pleased. The unit did smell terribly at first. I would strongly suggest burning a canister in the outdoors before you actually go out and use it in a tent or any enclosed area to burn off the smell. On a windy day it did take a little bit of effort to start but on the norm it started nicely. Once started the unit put off heat and stayed lit no matter in the wind or not. Being that I was using it in an open area, not enclosed, I probably could have used a bit more BTU's. I later used it in an enclosed area and was impressed with the warmth it provided. I was impressed by the fact that it is extremely quiet, portable, easy to start, and efficient.

Good design, sturdy construction, works great...but it really was not adequate for keeping a large tent warm. At best, it took the edge off the cold-32degs at 7,000'. My fault for buying a unit that was too small...but thought the rest of you might appreciate the advice. The formula for calculating how big of a heater you need is the volume of your tent (LxWxH) x 4. A better insulated space might have a multiplier of 3, or even 2. We camp in a nice 10x10 Eureka tent, tall enough to stand up in--and I should have got at least a 3000-4000btu heater. Although I haven't tried it, this unit would probably be adequate to warm a car, or maybe a truck camper shell, or a smaller tent. Happy camping!

Maker Faire at Union Station showcases magic of creativity
Jun 26, 2011 |Electricity is in the air this weekend at Union Station.</p><p>Literally, as in Tesla coils that make music with artificial lightning, and figuratively, as in the excitement of new ideas.</p><p>Kansas City’s first Maker Faire showcases the magic of creativity, from the fanciful to the practical. Inventors and budding entrepreneurs are showing off their stuff in displays that fill the station’s massive hall and spill outside.</p><p>Jorge Coleman of Kansas City has a prototype of a device he created — patent pending — that attaches to a smartphone or tablet and mirrors whatever you want to do, from games to video to the Internet, onto any high-definition screen.</p><p>“This could be huge,” said Coleman, who is looking for investors. “It takes out the need for a laptop for a lot of people.”</p><p>A highlight of Maker Faire is an hourly demonstration by an Austin, Texas, group of showmen called ArcAttack. Two custom-engineered Tesla coils throw out half-million volt electrical arcs that also create musical sounds.</p><p>“Thunder is really loud when it displaces air once,” explained Sam McFadden of ArcAttack. “We’re repetitively creating a lightning strike at the frequency of a musical note. It vibrates the air.”</p><p>A stroll though Maker Faire takes one past robotics demonstrations, hydrogen-powered cars and wandering cyborgs. Visitors have the chance to take the controls in a flight simulator built by Roger Dodger Aviation for the Airline History Museum in Kansas City.</p><p>A setup by Star Base Projects of Kansas City allows a person to stand in front of a digital camera on a platform that spins 360 degrees. The result is a video in which the individual appears stationary while Union Station swirls by in a blur in the background.</p><p>“It’s a new twist to the photo booth,” said Jared Wilson of Star Base Projects, which can be booked for parties, weddings or other events.</p><p>Dark Matter, another Kansas City-based enterprise, is demonstrating computer software that can make the most tone-deaf person sing in perfect pitch. It can also do other modifications to the human voice.</p><p>“We’re exploring new possibilities to let performers do things they couldn’t do before,” said Daniel Eichenbaum, curator of Dark Matter.</p><p>Some of the exhibitors at Maker Faire have more practical things in mind, such as Marcin Jakubowski of Missouri, who is developing prototypes of low-cost, build-it-yourself machines from tractors to earthen-brick compressors.</p><p>“I found industrial productivity can be established on a small scale,” said Jakubowski, who shares his blueprints to promote sustainable agriculture.</p><p>Anita and Brent Cockrum of Smithville and their 10-year-old daughter, Malia, were among visitors absorbing Maker Faire on Saturday.</p><p>“I didn’t know what to expect,” Anita Cockrum said. “We are having a really good time.”</p><p>They met a man who is trying to harness energy from the earth so people can “plug in” their homes to the ground. And they spent time talking with another who has created a solar-powered water heater. The Cockrums are going to try to make one of their own.</p><p>“There’s a lot of hands-on, practical stuff,” Anita Cockrum said. “A lot of people are willing to share their ideas freely. I like that.”</p><p>Maker Faire continues from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. today. Admission is $12.

Who still uses a Coleman fuel catalytic heater for camping?
Dec 22, 2008 by boboLiquid Coleman fuel; Heater, not a cooking stove. It has a catalytic dome that glows red and provides heat. I used it in a garage with a carbon monoxide detector and the detector registered zero. I know it uses up oxygen.
What i've done in the past is bought a gas powered generator and i used quartz radiant heaters when i was out camping in the mountains in the snow and sub zero temperatures.
These days i use a battery i removed from a bulldozer and use quartz heaters. Works really good for 2-3 days then i just hook up some cables to my truck battery start up and recharge the large battery for about 30 minutes every 2 or 3 days.
