GeekDad Puzzle of the Week: Sleepless Camping
May 22, 2012 | There are 30 degrees of “play” in the pop-top thermostat, meaning that if it’s set at 60, the
heater in fact brings the temperature to 70 before letting it decay over the course of 20 minutes until reaching 40, at which point it turns back on and... No worries — the pop-top has a propane
heater, set on a thermostat. It’s absolutely impossible to sleep with it on. Then again, it was absolutely impossible to sleep when the temperature got below 40 in the pop-top. Only, the heater blows like a Boeing 747 test wind tunnel. Kristi and I recently crossed a line that as parents we swore we’d never cross: we purchased a very used, tow-behind pop-top camper. At 8:00pm, we set the thermostat for 55 degrees and at 6:30am we got out of bed. (And how should we have set the thermostat to get more. Its inaugural run was this past weekend in Santa Fe, where Kristi had a psychology conference and the kids and I tagged along for comic relief. The thing about the hills outside Santa Fe in mid April is they’re mind-numbingly cold.

Who still uses a Coleman fuel catalytic heater for camping?
Dec 22, 2008 by bobo
Does anyone still use a COLEMAN catalytic heater that burns Coleman Liquid fuel (not propane) for camping? Do you use it in a tent? How much ventilation do you provide in the tent? I'm a little worried about Carbon Monoxide if I use it in the tent.
Liquid Coleman fuel; Heater, not a cooking stove. It has a catalytic dome that glows red and provides heat. I used it in a garage with a carbon monoxide detector and the detector registered zero. I know it uses up oxygen.
Don't use this in a tent unless you have all the vents open to the tent. They are not very efficient heating devices in really cold weather in a tent. I've heard of several people who have died using those type of heaters in tents without adequate ventilation.
What i've done in the past is bought a gas powered generator and i used quartz radiant heaters when i was out camping in the mountains in the snow and sub zero temperatures.
These days i use a battery i removed from a bulldozer and use quartz heaters. Works really good for 2-3 days then i just hook up some cables to my truck battery start up and recharge the large battery for about 30 minutes every 2 or 3 days.
A good heater for tent camping?
May 22, 5295 by solidsnake
Going tent camping on the 30th of this month to ride four wheelers and was wondering if anyone knew of a safe heater I could use in a tent.I have froze my butt off at brimstone recreation in November before so I am preparing for the worst. Any personal experiences with any certain heater? Any help is very much appreciated.
I use a candle lantern that burns 9 hour emergency candles. It does noticeably raise the temperature of the tent, if only by a few degrees. The biggest advantage is that it keeps condensation down very well.
