Fire marshal: Now is the time to inspect heating equipment

With summer winding down and cooler temperatures creeping in, the Alaska State Fire Marshal would like to remind residents that now is the time to ensure home heating equipment will operate safely.

Many homeowners forget about their heating systems until they use them for the first time each fall, said Alaska State Fire Marshal David Tyler in a statement.

Tyler said malfunctioning and misuse of heating equipment were the leading causes of home fires in Alaska for 2009 and 2010. Malfunctioning heating equipment is also a source of deadly carbon monoxide gas, he said.

Tyler recommended that Alaskans have their heating system inspected by a certified professional and repaired or replaced as needed.

Other important safety tips for home heating:

• Maintain heating equipment and chimneys by having them cleaned and inspected annually by a qualified professional.

• Install and maintain carbon monoxide alarms to avoid risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

What is the best electric room heater, that will heat a room pretty good. Oil-based radiator or what?

As one with first hand experience using both recently, consider this.
First of all all use electricity. Second, as a radiant heater, the oil filled radiator type are likely the least efficient. Not only does the oil have to heat up, but then IT has to heat the radiator, and in large measure the radiance isn't very far reaching.

I currently have ceramic, fan forced, but all you need do is research all, and you'll find NONE are truly economical, or efficient.
