How to fix a gas space heater ?
May 17, 2007 by xfire_2
We have an old wall mounted gas heater in our home. A manual valve regulates gas flow and there's a small pilot light. This is controlled by an electronic thermostat which toggles a built-in relais and usually 5 seconds after I hear that relais clicking gas will start flowing and gets lit. Today I noticed that this is no longer working. The thermostat triggers the heater but I do not hear any more gas (except for what's powering the pilot) to come out. How can I go about troubleshooting this ?
It is possible that you have a bad thermocouple, this will be placed inside the flame of the pilot and will not allow gas flow in the absence of the pilot flame.
Modern gas heaters have have valves that allow you to light the pilot safely and a thermocouple that shuts off the gas supply if the flame goes out.
These are absolutely critical safety features that you must have!
Saving a few dollars by using an old heater without these features is gambling with your life.
