Train drivers sick of freezing conditions may refuse to drive Wellington's oldest trains unless the heating is turned back on.
Train performance still bad, but improving
But KiwiRail says the trains' heaters were malfunctioning, filling carriages with smoke, forcing it to switch them off. Steps to turn the heat back on will begin today.
The Rail and Maritime Transport Union will meet next week to discuss conditions on the old English Electric units, amid mounting concerns that lack of heating is creating a health and safety risk for drivers, as well as angering passengers.
Among the actions being considered is a ban on driving trains without proper heating systems.
Union general secretary Wayne Butson said the trains were "bloody cold". "Rail drivers have had a gutsful of the lack of heating on the old English Electric units, and it is certainly annoying the commuting public as well.
"One of our guards received 70 complaints on his recent shift from the members of the public about the problem."
