Alabama fire-related deaths down 30% in 2011
May 22, 2012 | The vast majority happened in single family homes, Paulk said, and many of them were started by people heating their homes in dangerous ways -- such as using stoves for heating or misusing space heaters -- and leaving food unattended on the stove... The number of fire related deaths in Alabama dropped 30 percent in 2011, according to the state fire marshal's office. But even one death is too many and all 86 deaths in 2011 could have been prevented, said State Fire Marshal Ed Paulk. If you aren't using it on an extension cord, if you have it placed away from the wall & furniture and anything else combustible, there should be no problem. I'd make sure your smoke alarms have fresh batteries. It appears most house fires are caused by people who misuse the space heaters (curtains catch fire, electric outlets overheat etc.)
