What do I need to be aware of when using a propane space heater? I'm moving into a rental house that has a big rectangular metal space heater. It has to be plugged in but it's fueled by propane. That kinda baffles me, but whatever, I've always had CH/AC. My question is what do I need to know about this thing? All I know so far is that I'll need a carbon monoxide detector which the re-modelers are already installing.

Be careful especially with copper line. Propane leaves a deposit on the inside of the line which isn't usually a problem. But if you disturb or manipulate that line at all, the deposits can travel downstream and gum up the gas valve on the appliance. If you suspect the fuel line has too much of what we call "heavy ends" in it, you are better off replacing the line rather than trying to clean it. If this is the pilot line you are referring to, it is usually aluminum. You can remove it from the pilot burner and the gas valve and blow it out with compressed air. But there is nothing you can do with it installed on the appliance without risking damaging the gas valve or pilot assembly... |
