heaters proved to be viable energy savers in a pilot project North Carolina-based Progress Energy wrapped up in February. He said Progress was also looking at other costs associated with installing a solar hot water heater. Solar hot water heaters qualify for the federal tax credit of 30 percent. We were trying to get a good cross section of the population and get a sense of how switching to solar hot water heaters would impact energy usage,&rdquo. The company gave 150 customers $1,000 toward the purchase of a solar hot water heaters and evaluated each case. On average, homeowners saved about 63 percent on the water heater portion of their energy bills, an average of $235 a year. Since the families that tested the heaters were in North Carolina, they also qualified for a state tax rebate of 35 percent (up to $1,400). Those solar incentives , paired with the $1,000 credit from the utility, made projects more affordable. On average, installation cost $7,271, but...

can a solar water heater be hooked with a tankless water system?

i am thinking about saving cost and energy. want to get a tankless water heater. i would like to have a solar water heater too, but heard that u need a stoage tank for the solar heater. not sure if i can combine the two. anyone got an answer for me?
you could have a 2 panel 80 gallon tank solar thermal system backed up by a tankless. but if you have a tankless, you dont need anything else, it wont work with solar panels, you must have a storage tank. if you have the money, do it. (roughly $10,000) installed with a heating element in your air handler to pre heat your air in the winter. payback around 5 years pending tax credits. if thats to complicated, just do tankless, they are awesome. do both if you have the dough. your neighbors will be jealous.
How can i build a solar heater for an above ground pool?
Jun 12, 2007 by gmstet
I've heard tha t a solar heater can be built using some type of metal that heats up quickly in the sun, you can then use some type of hosing to snake it thru the metal like a radiator i just don't know what kind of metal or tubing.
a neighbor of mine used his roof and 2" black flexible PVC hose.
Instead of looping from the filter right back into the pool....he took the output from the filter and ran it through about 80-120 feet of 2" black flexible PVC tubing over the roof of his house. If you have a 2 story home, this is not an option as the pump will not pump that far up.....this was a 1 story ranch.
The tubing over the roof will absorbe enough radiant heat which will be transferred to the water in the hose......Without any extra expense except the hoses and couplings (about $90)...he was able to maintain about 78-82 degree water.
the more hose on the roof, the more heat transfer.....the heat transfer can be adjusted by minimizing or mazimizing how much hose lays on the roof........
keep an eye on your filter motor that it doesn't over heat.....if the motor is getting too hot, you may need to either RAISE the filter so the pump is pumping to a lower relative altitude or increase the pump size.
