Saving the Planet, One Pellet at a Time

May 22, 2012 | To help reduce heating requirements, six wood pellet burning furnaces will replace the aging heating oil furnaces. The latest effort has been to install new furnaces that produce heat by burning wood pellets, which is 30 to 40 percent more economical than using heating oil. Additional funding has been allocated to provide Baumholder with two more wood pellet furnaces that will heat an additional three buildings. When the project is complete, the six new furnaces will relieve seven buildings of their heating oil dependency. These buildings are currently heated with oil burning furnaces. Baumholder energy initiatives are saving the planet, one wood pellet at a time. Three of the new furnaces are already functional and on line. Baumholder currently has about 50 buildings that are not connected to the steam heating system, mostly due to their remote locations. Army Garrison Baumholder is moving forward with initiatives to save energy and help create an environmentally friendly community. Army issued the following news release:. Read more »

Are corn furnaces or wood pellet furnaces a better alternative to my natural gas home furnace?

Jan 16, 2007 by Jesse D
After a friend in Iowa told me that they heat their house to 80 degrees for only $1 per day, I had to figure out a better way to do what I am doing. They use a shelled-corn-fueled-furnace. After doing some research I have found that many recommend wood pellet furnaces. So, which is most efficient and which has a stronger future (ie. fuel supply, less volatile price for the commodity, etc.)? Thanks
I have two corn burning stoves and I have been very happy with them. I am not sure if corn or wood pellets is more efficient but I think corn is cheaper to operate. Also you can buy corn in bulk from a farmer or grain elevator, with pellets you have all the bags. The heat from corn seems to help with humidity, it does not feel as dry. Right now I am using one bushel of corn per day so thats about $3.50 (for each stove). Last year it was $2.00. Corn prices do change so $2 can and most likely will happen again.

Home heating question pellet furnace v. in floor heat!?

Dec 07, 2007 by litl m
In our home remodel we are planning a change in the heating system. A home addition and several updates in the current house. Currently we are using a forced air propane furnace and its very expensive. We are considering in floor heat for the addition (master bedroom, bath, and family room), and a pellet furnace for the entire home. Has anyone any experience with both systems. How does price compare in operation AND comfort level.
ps we are in central IL!
We had a radiant floor heating system in one of our previous homes, and we were absolutely delighted with it. However since it required an 80 gallon hot water tank it ate up the energy costs big time both in electricity to run the hot water tank and also natural gas costs. Your pellet stove, I'm almost confident would be more economical.

The problems of conventional biomass fuels can be lessened or even prevented altogether by the use of pellets with consistent quality - low moisture content, high energy density and homogeneous size and shape. Biomass as a fuel alternative to coal, oil or gas has several drawbacks attributed mainly to its low energy density, high moisture content and heterogeneity. Consistent fuel quality makes pellets a suitable fuel type for all areas of application, reaching from stoves and central heating systems up to large-scale plants, and with practically complete automation in all these capacity ranges. It was not until such a homogenous biomass fuel with regard to shape and size was introduced to the market that the development of fully automatic biomass furnaces for small-scale applications with a similar user comfort as modern oil or gas heating systems was possible.
