Area fire marshals talk about safety

May 24, 2011 |

The majority of house fires, especially during colder weather, are the result of unswept chimneys, poorly maintained heating systems, unwatched kitchen stoves, burning cigarettes and badly placed space heaters, according to local fire marshals.

But New Fairfield Fire Marshal Mike Crawford said he's seen several fires sparked by how some people get rid of ashes from wood stoves or fireplaces.

"The issue of people putting hot ashes on a wooden deck and setting it on fire are pretty much never-ending," Crawford said.

Fires start for a lot of other reasons, too. But some causes stand out from other fires they've investigated, according to Crawford and other local fire marshals.

Take the common, heavy-duty orange extension cord, available at nearly any hardware or home improvement store, said Jim Johnson , fire marshal for the city of Danbury.

When properly used, such cords safely deliver electricity to any number of appliances or power tools almost any distance from the nearest outlet.

Are corn furnaces or wood pellet furnaces a better alternative to my natural gas home furnace?

Jan 16, 2007 by Jesse D
After a friend in Iowa told me that they heat their house to 80 degrees for only $1 per day, I had to figure out a better way to do what I am doing. They use a shelled-corn-fueled-furnace. After doing some research I have found that many recommend wood pellet furnaces. So, which is most efficient and which has a stronger future (ie. fuel supply, less volatile price for the commodity, etc.)? Thanks
I have two corn burning stoves and I have been very happy with them. I am not sure if corn or wood pellets is more efficient but I think corn is cheaper to operate. Also you can buy corn in bulk from a farmer or grain elevator, with pellets you have all the bags. The heat from corn seems to help with humidity, it does not feel as dry. Right now I am using one bushel of corn per day so thats about $3.50 (for each stove). Last year it was $2.00. Corn prices do change so $2 can and most likely will happen again.

Home heating question pellet furnace v. in floor heat!?

Dec 07, 2007 by litl m
In our home remodel we are planning a change in the heating system. A home addition and several updates in the current house. Currently we are using a forced air propane furnace and its very expensive. We are considering in floor heat for the addition (master bedroom, bath, and family room), and a pellet furnace for the entire home. Has anyone any experience with both systems. How does price compare in operation AND comfort level.
ps we are in central IL!
We had a radiant floor heating system in one of our previous homes, and we were absolutely delighted with it. However since it required an 80 gallon hot water tank it ate up the energy costs big time both in electricity to run the hot water tank and also natural gas costs. Your pellet stove, I'm almost confident would be more economical.

The Pellet Handbook: The Production and Thermal Utilisation of Pellets $141.31 BetterWorld.com - New, Used, Rare Books & Textbooks It was not until such a homogenous biomass fuel with regard to shape and size was introduced to the market that the development of fully automatic biomass furnaces for small-scale applications with a similar user comfort as modern oil or gas heating systems was possible. Yet until now, prospective users and producers have had to sift through a diverse array of literature and manuals to find all the information they need. Consistent fuel quality makes pellets a suitable fuel type for all areas of application, reaching from stoves and central heating systems up to large-scale plants, and with practically complete automation in all these capacity ranges. The problems of conventional biomass fuels can be lessened or even prevented altogether by the use of pellets with consistent quality - low moisture content, high energy density and homogeneous size and shape. It addresses all the players of the pellet market, ranging from raw material producers or suppliers, pellet producers and traders, manufacturers of pellet furnaces and pelletisation systems, installers, engineering companies, energy consultants up to the end users and hopes to contribute to a further increase of pellet utilisation within the energy sector by appropriate distribution of information.
