Wood Stove Exchange Program Could Save You Thousands

Don't let them scrap your fire just because they say all stoves before 1990 are polluting ones. Ever think how they could possibly make such a grand generalisation? They can't and if you got them to pull the report out, the testing, and the data to qualify it I think you'd be surprised at just how much junk data is involved. Fact is most of the problem causing smoke with enclosed burners is the chimney being exposed to the cold, winter air. That's it. The colder it is, the less wind there is the worse your fire will perform. Find in their test for new appliances where they incorporate winter atmospheric conditions. They don't. They test the appliance only and in ideal conditions. A New Zealander has designed a new shape of cowl that stops smoke in less than 3 minutes from old pre 1990 wood burners. There is no moving parts, no catalytics and proves most of what they are doing to improve fires and enforce zoning laws is based on incorrect science. I'm being quite serious.

How do you convert a pellet stove to a wood stove?
Jul 23, 2008 by Heather C
My husband and I are buying a house with a pellet stove and would like to have a wood-burning stove instead. Is it possible to swap the pellet stove out and how hard is it?
If you simply remove a free standing pellet stove and add a wood stove without changing the stove pipe you will burn your house down. A wood stove puts a lot of heat out the chimney(not as effecient). If you have an insert in an original wood burning firplace you will need to remove the pellet stove and restore the wood fireplace to its original condition including the chimney if needed. If you have a free standing pellet stove with a small 3"-4" pipe going to the outside for exhaust then you would have to completely convert that to a larger 6'-8' triple wall pipe which will cost at least $300 alone depending on how far it has to go.
You wont find a wood stove more effecient than a pellet stove so I unless it is for ornamental purposes only I would leave it alone. I know that wood fires can be more natural and more appealing than a pellet fire but it is your preference.
Can I install a pellet stove in a house with a water boiler heat system. quad level house w/fireplace?
Jul 31, 2006 by Donald M
The house is a quad level with the fireplace on level 2. Our heat bills are high so I need to do something. I could either put in the pellet stove insert in the fireplace or put a pellet stove in the basement and try to attach it to my hot water heat system. Is it possible to put the pellet stove in the garage? I just don't know anything about this stuff. What about the cost - should I be able to stay under 3000$? Could this thing heat my water heater?
The answer to your question is yes. The cost will depend on the system you install, but you should get out for under $3,000.00.
My sister and brother-in-law installed a wood burning unit in their detached garage last fall. The garage is located some 60' from the house. They buried the circulation pipes and them to a heat exchanger attached to their forced air furnace. They add wood twice a day and have drastically reduced their natural gas utulity bills. They did the work themselves for under $1,400.00.
Best advice is to get estimates from reliable contractors and check out their references before signing a contract.
Good luck with your heating project.
