Smells like pine

May 18, 2011 | We used to live in England, my Finnish wife would become homesick whenever she smelt pine. Her homesick reactions to woody smells would often occur on woodland walks, or near freshly chopped wood, around sawdust or even during visits to furniture shops. I didn’t say anything at the time but thought these reactions were a tad eccentric, especially when this happened in IKEA. I have to say that now that I live in Finland, I can understand my wife’s timber-related homesickness. This is because lots of the things I’ve grown to love about this country are associated with wood (and woody smells).

When I think about the beautiful Finnish countryside, the first thing that springs to mind is trees. Drive out into the country and all you see are endless pine forests. Mostly pine. A good dose of spruce, but mostly pine. Kilometre after kilometre of dense, tall forest as far as the eye can see (which isn’t very far because the land is pretty flat). The guidebooks tell me Finland is 85 per cent forest and I can certainly believe that.
