Salter's: A view to a 'grill'
May 22, 2012 | A dozen years ago, when he jumped from longtime manager to owner of the business original owner George Salter still runs the upstairs Ski Shop that he opened in 1974 Stong saw the writing on the outdoor wall and installed a two-tiered patio... We did the new one because of all the new products that have been introduced exciting new stuff, from tiki torches to contemporary burners to in-wall high efficiency gas fireplaces that look real contemporary. Right now only about 20 percent of Stongs business is tied to the outdoor fire pits, fireplaces, patio furniture and accessories, but Stong expects that to change before too long. I have a feeling that will grow because more and more people are creating nice outdoor spaces, Stong said. No doubt about it, fire pits are hot. We put that in as one of the first moves we made then because I saw the upcoming trend with that.

I want to put a firepit on a wood deck - The manual says no. Just a precaution?

We have one of those metal fire pits that are off the ground, and fully enclosed by a screen. The instructions way "Do NOT use on a wood deck or any combustible surface." Problem is, a wood deck is the only place we have to put this. Is this just a precaution they are required to put in the instructions? Do any of you have an outdoor fireplace on a wood deck? If I got one of those fireproof "grill mats", would that suffice?
They do put the warning on there to protect themselves against a lawsuit but if you place it away from any railings and insure it is covered when in use then I have had no problem with mine. I did however use a grid of stepping stones underneath to insure that any hot legs did not do damage to the deck.
I want to use my firepit on my wood deck. What do I need under it to fully protect my deck from the heat?

It's an Evening Sky Firepit, sits fairly close to the ground.
I've just constructed and installed one. The first two answers are correct, though you don't strictly need the copper sheet. You could also use garden pavers.
The issue isn't so much about the deck catching fire as the deck retaining moisture under the fireproof board. You should at some points, especially after rain, move the pit and take up the board allowing the decking drying time. Even weather treated decking lumber splits and rots.
