Commission recommends more funding for Fairbanks' wood stove program
Feb 07, 1028 | Being born and raised in Fairbanks Alaska; (and now in turn raising my own family here) I heat my 1400 sq ft. house with a standard Blazeking
wood stove. It saves me roughly $2500-$3500 a year in heating oil costs. When i purchased my home in the GoldStream valley the previous owner installed a very undersized Oil Burning Forced Air Furnace; that is completely inadequate for heating my home. The day I have to start giving oil companies that $2500 dollars a year to heat my home is the day I pack up my family and move out of Alaska. Wood is a renewable resource (oil is not) and has been used to heat family's homes for eons. I realize most of the debate is over these new outdoor wood boilers that have become so popular over the last 5 to 10 years. But regulations affect us all. Wood is my primary source of heat and it's not the local or federal governments job to tell me what i can and can't do in my own home. Everyday it seems our country is turning more and more into a police state. What

Wood Stove???

Any good tips on how to use one..
We are going camping and the cabin we will be staying at has a wood stove, like back in the old days, with the burners on top and a place to heat water...
I have never used one but could use some tips if you got any..
Thanks!!!
Like: How much wood do I use, stuff like that!!
We have a wood stove in our house, and to make the fire initially make sure you have some kindling and newspaper. Stack the kindling up around the newspaper, sort of like a teepee. Make sure its sturdy so it can support bigger pieces of wood. Light the paper underneath the kindling and let it burn a bit. Then put bigger logs on top once you know the fire is going to keep burning. Usually we use about 3-4 logs to get the fire going.
After that, if you want to keep it burning, add about 2 logs every 1 1/2 hours or so. We usually go through about... 10-15 pieces of wood a day, and thats what we use to heat our house.
I hope this helped a bit! Have fun camping!
Can I connect insulated stove pipe directly to the wood stove?
Mar 10, 2008 by samiam32888
I am hooking up a wood stove and was wondering if it's possible to connect the insulated pipe directly to the wood stove.
You need to use the insulated pipe from the ceiling box up. You DON'T necessarily have to settle for single wall pipe down to the stove. There is a pipe called "close clearance" stove pipe which is double wall but not insulated. We heat our store with wood and the pipe stays cool enough that it won't burn you on contact. If you're using a good air tight EPA stove you shouldn't be losing enough heat up the pipe to help "heat" the house with. If you can post what brand of insulated pipe you're using I can send you all of the part numbers that you need. Hope this helps! I hate seeing so much bad information on here!!
